The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) delivered a decisive performance

Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF)

Riding a strong wave of anti-incumbency, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) has staged an impressive comeback in the Kerala local body elections, with results declared on Saturday, December 13, showing a decisive mandate across all tiers—panchayats, block panchayats, municipalities, and corporations.

Corporation Sweep & LDF’s Major Setback

The UDF delivered a stunning performance in the Municipal Corporations, winning four out of the state’s six:

  • UDF Victories: Kochi, Kannur (retained), Kollam, and Thrissur. The victory in Kollam, a traditional Left stronghold, has emerged as a major surprise.
  • LDF Performance: The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF), which previously held five corporations, was reduced to just one—Kozhikode—where it failed to secure an absolute majority.
  • Gains: The UDF also managed to increase its seats in Thiruvananthapuram and Kozhikode corporations.

Municipalities, Blocks, and Panchayats

The UDF maintained its upper hand in urban bodies and showed clear leads at the grassroots:

  • Municipalities: The UDF is leading in 58 of the total 87 Municipalities.
  • District Panchayats: Both the UDF and LDF were neck-and-neck, leading in 7-7 of the 14 District Panchayats.
  • Block & Gram Panchayats: The UDF showed a clear lead in both Block and Gram Panchayats, indicating strong rural support.

BJP’s Emergence and Political Ramifications

The elections also underscored the emerging influence of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA). Senior journalist MG Radhakrishnan noted that the BJP’s emergence as a third major force is a key factor, with the pro-BJP erosion of Hindu votes now impacting the Left—a shift evident in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.

The setback for the LDF, especially in Kollam and Alappuzha, has been described as a major surprise, indicating an erosion of pro-Left Hindu votes.

Leaders React: A Mandate for the Assembly Polls

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi termed the results a “decisive and heartening mandate,” stating on X: “These results are a clear sign of growing confidence in the UDF and point the way towards a sweep in the upcoming Assembly election.”

AICC general secretary and MP KC Venugopal echoed this sentiment, calling the outcome a powerful comeback for the UDF. Analysts view this result as potentially the worst performance for the LDF in the last 20 years, marking a significant turn in the state’s political history.
